  2. Hi, I live in Portugal with my son. I have recently decided to home school. I would like to ask if there is a way to access the booklets which refer to question 1 ( Reading ) of the past exam papers for English first language. I would really appreciate it if I could also have some advice on which books/novels my son should be reading to help him. He already reads the newspaper a lot.

How important is it to receive the ICE certificate? My son is 16 he has attended Portuguese school from the age of 6, therefore is has had no education following the English curriculum. As per Portuguese law he has to attend school for 1 more year, however he has failed all subjects for the past 2 years in 10th grade. I only found out this year that homeschooling was legal in Portugal, I believe its the best decision for my son. I ask about the ICE because I don’t believe that he will manage 7 IGCSE’s this year alone. He is studying now for only 4 – English, Maths, History and Economy. He requires these to go onto study Law. Any information you give me I will truly appreciate. Thank you for your time!

    • Hi Nora,
      Thank you for writing in.

Please download the latest syllabus here: http://www.igcsecentre.com/cambridge-igcse-subjects-syllabuses/. You would be able to learn how you are being assessed for each paper: Reading, Writing, etc…

For books, you may search here: http://www.igcsecentre.com/recommended-books/. Just click on the required subject on the right sidebar. Alternatively, you may also search on Amazon UK site. They have many books for IGCSE.

ICE is just an option for schools which prefer to offer group subjects. It is not necessary to obtain one if you are a private candidate. Just follow the required subjects for your further studies. We strongly suggest you to read this article about “Home Education”: http://www.igcsecentre.com/what-is-homeschooling/

Once you have decided on the subjects, please pay a visit to your local British Council, or locate any registered Cambridge School which accept private candidate, to register yourself for the exams. As a private candidate, you have the flexibility to sit for one or two subjects in one examination series, then continue again for the next examination series. Please find out more details with your local British Council.

Enrolling into an online course would help too. Please read more here: http://www.igcsecentre.com/cambridge-igcse-revision-courses/. These courses are good for preparing for your exams. Please read all the happy A* candidates’ testimonials. 🙂

  5. Hi,
Does the vocabulary level and different sentence structure affect our marks in 0500 first language english. Does usage of some sophisticated and complex sentences help get good grades?

    • Hi Pavan,

First of all, having a wide range of vocabulary helps in articulating/express your ideas, thoughts when you’re writing. However, this does not mean that you will get better grades when you use complex sentences.

If you refer to the syllabus here (http://www.igcsecentre.com/cambridge-igcse-subjects-syllabuses/) , you can see that you will be assessed on your ability to:
      1. articulate experience and express what is thought, felt and imagined
      2. sequence facts, ideas and opinions
      3. use a range of appropriate vocabulary
      4. use register appropriate to audience and context
      5. make accurate use of spelling, punctuation and grammar

Go through the syllabus to get a better idea of what is expected of you 🙂

  7. Dear IGCSE Centre, Is Science a compulsory subject needed in order to pass my IGCSE’s? I am a privet candidate and I’v omitted Science from the list of IGCSE subects that I will be taking into examination, instead I will be taking the following 4 IGCSE subjects; ICT, Art and Design, Mathematics and First Language English. I will also be combining it with one Cambridge O Level subject, that is Religious Studies Bible Knowledge. That makes a total of 5 subjects. Will this be sufficient enough to show that I have passed my GCSEs? Please let me know as soon as possible 🙂

IGCSE and O Level are two different examinations. You must confirm the acceptance from the university. Some universities do accept a combination of certificates, while some don’t.

  20. Dear Igcse centre ,
I am studying in school were teachers aren’t helpful and they just ask us to do past papers ?
How do past papers help us ! when each year there are new questions made?

    • Hi,

Past exam papers are one of the most helpful tools available to prepare for examinations. It gives you the idea of the number of questions and the available choices. The time for solving the exam paper can be efficiently managed if you have the idea about the pattern of the exam paper. It also helps you focus on the common themes – you can get familiar with the kinds of questions that come up in exams.
