Hello,
Can you answer this for me?
Show that the volume of a metal sphere of radius 15cm is 14140cm3, correct to 4 significant
figures.
[The volume, V, of a sphere with radius r is V = 4/3 πr3.]
Dear Tom,
First let’s solve the problem using the given equation for the volume of a sphere.
It is V = 4/3*[latex]\pi[/latex]*r3
As r = 15 cm ,[latex]\pi[/latex]= 22/7
V = 4/3*[latex]\pi[/latex]*(15 cm)3
V = 14 137.166 cm3
And then let’s see the meaning of the phrase “correct to 4 significant figures”. To determine the significant figures of a number, we have to follow 3 rules.
1. Non-zero digits are always significant.
2. Any zeros between two significant digits are significant.
3. A final zero or trailing zeros in the decimal portion only are significant.
We can identify the significant digits of our answer from left to right. According to the above rules in 14137.166 , 4th significant figure is 3. To round this, we will consider the very next digit of the 4th significant figure, which it is 7, and 7 is greater than 5. If the next digit is greater than or equal to 5, we are adding 1 to the given significant figure (round up). So the answer is 14140 cm3.
Hope this will help. We are here for you!
Can you do this for economics too ?
Hello Akarsh,
Thank you for your suggestion. We shall consider that.
