    • Hi Elena,

Science – Combined (0653) gives learners the opportunity to study Biology, Chemistry and Physics, each covered in separate syllabus sections. It is a single award qualification, earning one grade.

On the other hand, if you take the separate sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) you will earn three grades and it will enable you to enrol into a wider range of courses in the university later.

It is best that you inquire with your chosen university and check the subject entry requirements in accordance to what you want to pursue for further studies.

  1. Dear IGCSE
I have an Additional maths test on Monday. In most questions on the paper candidates end up with a quadratic equation for examples on question like finding points of intersections. I wanted to ask if we are required show the use of solving quadratic techniques like quadratic formula to avoid losing marks for insufficient working or we could directly factorise and write down the x values and lose no marks till it’s correct?

    Thank you

    • Hello Anay,

One of the common mistakes made by the students is not showing sufficient working for the solution of the quadratic equation.

As such, you must show all necessary working clearly; no marks will be given for answers provided without evidence of how you reached them. Your working allows you to demonstrate that you know the required mathematical methods to get the answer, and shows that you haven’t just used a calculator to get the final result.

We hope this helps and we wish you well with your exams.

  2. Dear IGCSE Centre,
    I’m wondering if I got
–> 65 out of 80 in my THEORY
–> 15 out of 40 in my ATP
—-> x out of 40 in my MCQs
How much should I get approximately to get an A OR A* ??
There’s no need of referring to any Grade Thresholds…
Please just give an ESTIMATE or AVERAGE

    • Hello Anushia,

We cannot speculate it because each year has different marks for each grade.

Thank you so much for your understanding.

    • Hello Elena,

      Thank you for writing in.

A good guideline is to take English, Maths, and Science subjects. Furthermore, you should also consider what will be your subject specialisation when you pursue your teaching career. For example, if you want to teach English, you might consider also taking English Literature as the two subjects have considerable overlap.

It is also best that you confirm the subject entry requirements from your preferred university.

        • Hi Elena,

It is good to consider taking Literature as English and Literature have considerable overlap. But we strongly suggest that you check with your chosen university. In this way, you would have 100% confirmation on their subject entry requirements.
