  3. Dear IGCSE team

I am Pakistani, Dr. Hemandas working in Nizwa Hospital Oman.

My child had passed class 8th in this April 2017 from Pakistani school Nizwa, Oman and now I want him to do IGSCE home studies as he can?t attended regular schools.

I register my child in Pakistani school Muscat Oman offering IGCSE.

I have read the your article show that the candidate must take 2 subject from group 1 and 4 subjects from rest 4 groups and 7th subject with his or her choice.

The Pakistani school Muscat offering 3 options with following subjects.

Option 1: English, Urdu/Arabic, Maths, Islamiat , Pakistan studies, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. 8 subjects

Option 2: English, Urdu/Arabic, Maths, Islamiat , Pakistan studies, Physics, Chemistry and ICT. 8 subjects

Option 3: English, Urdu/Arabic, Maths, Islamiat , Pakistan studies, Accounting, Business Studies and biology. 8 subjects

They are offering subjects 2 subjects from group one but not offering other subjects from rest 4 groups like omitting one group with each option.

I want my son to take science and other necessary allied subjects with them.

I will continue his A level studies in Oman and try for Universities in UK for further studies.

    So my quires

    1. What subjects and how many (minimum) numbers of subjects I should choice for my son to prepare my son for science group.

    2. As I mention, I will continue him here in Oman, is this important to take Urdu (which is only choice) as other subject from group one.

    3. Can I take only 5 important subjects for him?? Like English, Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Physics. Or it is important to take 7 subjects include Urdu and Pakistan studies (which I will choice if find necessary)

    4. Can I take 5 important subjects for science Like English, Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Physics with ICT and Accounting to complete 7 subjects?

    Thanks and regards

    • Hello Dr. Hemandas,

Here are the answers to your questions:

      1. Since you have already registered your son with a formal school, you must follow the school’s subjects options. There is no need to follow this rule: “2 subject from group 1 and 4 subjects from rest 4 groups and 7th subject with his or her choice.” if you are not taking the ICE Award. This rule is only applicable for those who wish to register for the ICE Award. Since the school is not offering one of the group required for ICE Award, you do not have to worry about it. You can read more about ICE Award here: https://www.igcsecentre.com/what-is-cambridge-ice/

      2. Urdu might be the official language subject that is needed for that country. If this rule does not apply to you, you can always choose other subject. However, you need to check with the school on who is required to take Urdu.

      3. Again, as we mentioned in our answer no. 1, since you have already registered your son with a formal school, you ought to follow the subject options in the school. However, if you register your son as a “Private Candidate” with this school, you might be able to only register your son for the 5 subjects only: English, Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Physics. Please discuss with the school, as we do not know if your son is formally the school’s student or “Private Candidate” registered with this school just to sit for his exams.

      4. Yes you may. However, you must consult the school for the option to register for these 7 subjects separately as a “Private Candidate”.

We hope these help. You can always come back to us if you need more assistance.

    • Hello Nkechi,
If this language is the official language for that country, then it would be compulsory to take that language in that country. You have to check with the school if this rule apply to you or not. You can always opt out from this language if the country official rule does not apply to you.
