Hi Arjun,
It is not necessary, but it is preferred by many university. Or, you can call up the university that you want to apply and ask them directly. On the other hand, you must take Computer Science or ICT, and Physics is a must.
Hi,I am a homeschooling student. Is it too late to start IGCSE courses at 17 years old? What subject should I take if I want to study Law in university?
We are in the UK since 5 months and my son (13 yo, Year 8) will be homeschooled from the next term on. He’d go for the IGCSE. I searched the web a lot but a couple of things are still not clear for me, maybe you can help:
1. How and where do homeschooled kids sit the exams?
2. Can he do 2 subjects in may/june, then 2 more in oct/nov and so on?
3. Does “core subjects” mean they are mandatory? Does he really have to do a Science subject? (He’s totally an artist kid… Music, photography, media, computer graphics… He’s good with Math but terrible with Science.)
4. He is Hungarian and his English is okay (he was doing well in school), but still needs a lot of improvement. Can he do English as a second language? How is it different from 1st language English IGCSE?
5. Is there IGCSE in Photography? He’s studying at the New York Institute of Photography online, it’s a very extensive and in-depth course. If there isn’t and he needs to do the whole Art and Design subject, how is the coursework part done when he’s homeschooled?
1. Homeschooled kids usually write their exams with British Council. Just visit your nearest British Council for more details.
2. Yes he can do so.
3. Yes, the 3 core subject groups are English Group, Maths Group, and Science Group. Just choose one subject from each group. The other 2 subjects, he can choose from any group.
4. Yes, he can do English as Second Language. There is vast difference between first language and second language. Just download some past papers for comparison.
5. No. There is no Photography for IGCSE. You may get some advice from British Council on how he can write this subject as Private Candidate. Usually you need to register him with a school that accept “Private Candidate”. Please discuss with British Council.
