Hi IGCSE Team,
My son doesn’t want to take any subjects in the Humanities Group therefore will not be receiving the group award. My question is how important is the group award? Is it a requirement for entry into university in Australia? He intends to further studies in Australia.
Thank you.
Hi Lilly,
Group award is only required by certain universities. It is especially popular in the US and Canada. You have to be sure that your son’s school does not follow the Group Award. If yes, then he ought to follow. If your son is a “Private Candidate”, then he is free to choose the subjects from the above subject groups.
I’d like clarification on this – the information doesn’t appear to be on this page. I think there is some confusion, because the only reference to core subjects on this page are the 5 compulsory studies of each student – I’m assuming you’re not saying they can only score a maximum of a C grade in these subjects?? As I read it (above) you’re saying that they must score a MINIMUM of C in these subjects to be admitted to the next level of education…??
“Core subjects” is not the same meaning as “Core curriculum”. Core subjects are: 1 subject from the English Group, 1 subject from the Maths Group, 1 subject from the Science Group, and the other 2 can be from any groups as stated above.
Each subject consists of “Extended curriculum/Extended tier” and “Core curriculum/Core tier”. The highest grade available for “Extended curriculum” is Grade A*, while for “Core curriculum” is Grade C.
We haven’t said the students can only score Grade C for the 5 compulsory studies. 🙂
I have a question about core and extend .. What is far more required in universities in the work I mean is C grade in core would be accepted . And what is the highest score in core .
Definitely reputable universities are requiring Grade A/A*. Some universities do accept Grade C. You have to get the confirmation from the university that you intend to apply for.
The highest grade for “Core curriculum” is Grade C.
My son will be appearing for his final IGCSE exam( class 10 ) in March. His subjects are English, Hindi, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and IT. He doesn’t have a subject from the 2nd Group i.e. Humanities &Social Sciences. Does he qualify for the next level of Class 11/12 in the IB or ISC Boards?
Thank you for your visit! We have got a new site. Please go to our new site Skolatis.com to leave your comments and continue the hot discussions! See you there!

The highest grade for “Core curriculum” is Grade C. If you intend to achieve Grade A*, you ought to register for “Extended curriculum”.

Hi Mawlong,
You must get the confirmation from IB or ISC Boards. The requirements are from them, not from IGCSE.
